Regional Information

Living up to its name, our region has plenty on offer for productions.

Bay Of Plenty Map

An attractive climate with some of the highest sunshine hours in New Zealand, as well as diverse landscapes from beautiful beaches to thermal wonderlands to forested high country ranges.

The region is easily accessible from other New Zealand centres, especially Auckland, and well serviced by road and air transport, cellphone, wireless and wired data networks.

Climate

With 125km of coastline, the Bay of Plenty’s temperate maritime climate is one of its great drawcards. Sheltered by high country ranges on three sides, it is one of the sunniest and least windy regions in New Zealand, while its seas are among the calmest and warmest in the country.

Geography

The region’s three main urban centres – Tauranga, Rotorua and Whakatāne - form a triangle. The largest centre is Tauranga city (pop. > 110,000), situated around a beautiful harbour including a major international shipping port, and with long stretches of white sandy beach.

Rotorua, further inland, is a Māori culture and tourism hub, with many freshwater lakes, native and plantation forests and geothermal attractions. And Whakatāne is the sunshine capital, a coastal area again with beautiful beaches, large areas of native forest, a large protected harbour and of course the wonderland of White Island (an active offshore volcano).
