Over the past week, a wide range of Bay of Plenty residents, curious about the local film industry, attended the Film Industry Pathways roadshow, hosted by Bay of Plenty Film.

Designed by Paula Jones, who ran South Seas Film School for over 10 years, the workshop provided an inspiring, but realistic overview of working on big film productions in New Zealand, the many and varied roles in the industry, and upcoming work opportunities locally for entry level and experienced crew members alike.

The 6 workshops were held in Tauranga, Rotorua, Mt Maunganui, Ōpōtiki, Whakatāne and Taupō, and attracted approximately 150 locals, including budding directors, editors, cinematographers, actors and even horse wranglers.  Bay of Plenty Film CEO, Anton Steel said “I was blown away by how many people attended the workshops. It was great to connect and see people’s passion for the film industry, and discover more of the amazing talent we have in the Bay.”

The next workshop opportunity is the Directors Toolkit Workshop, co-hosted by Bay of Plenty Film and the Directors and Editors Guild of NZ (DEGNZ).  Award winning director, Jason Stutter, will be sharing his directorial experience on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th of September at Ignition Coworking Space in Tauranga.  It is free to DEGNZ members, and $100 to non members.

Jason Stutter’s first movie was cult kung-fu caper “Tongan Ninja” (2002). Since then he has worked on features – self-funded comedy “Edwin: My Life as a Koont”, stylish Ronald Hugh Morrieson adaptation “Predicament” – and on shorts, including the hit “Careful”... a series, riffing on the dangers of inattentive tool use. His most recent feature, haunted house tale “The Dead Room”, was released in New Zealand in 2015.
